MTWAPA BAR ON GAY WEDDING ROW FACES CLOSURE

Club Califonia, the bar and restaurant of which the rumours had it would be the location for the first gay wedding in Kenya faces closure. The Department of public health visited the club on 12th of February and are now making impossible demands on the club owners. Though its by no means a gay club, the owner has not discriminated against gay who regularly hold events at the club.

The owner of the club received the following letter from the divisional public health officer. Though its not clear what he is supposed to do - the letter is typically written in an ambigious language to ensure that he is forced to close the club. Let us give him any support we can including revocking this order.

Sounds to me like the officer is doing his job.. and requests the club owner to put up walls, paint, fix a dangerous floor, clean up, etc! Maybe the anticipate that gay people like to be in more polished ambiance! LOL!

it doesnt sound like victimization.

Alphy: the reason that this might be considered victimization is the _arbitrary application:_ of the law resp. regulations. What the inspecting officers noted, is the normal substandard of virtually every club. But is very likely only against this presumed "gay" club that a pedantic and finicky standard is upheld.

I agree with Alexander, Alphy. This report may seem innocuous but it's timing is wrong. Also I can guarantee that the neighbouring makuti thatch clubs are in similar or worse state. Virtually every bar/club on the mombasa northcoast strip that is open air/makuti thatched has the same so called 'defects' mentioned above. This is clear discrimination, victimisation and harassment.

They should just bribe the DC and be done with it!(kidding) Its the only language they understand. Money knows no sexuality.
